We are now well and truly into the New Year of 2014. For those of you who set goals at the start of the year how are you doing with following through? The truth is most of us who set goals for ourselves in January fail to bring them into reality. In fact statistics say that out of the 49 percent of people who do set goals, half of them will have given up on them by the second week in January!

To help you get back on track and start making your goals a reality; here are my top 5 secrets you must do to ensure you achieve your goals:

Secret No. 5 – Write them down

Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California, did a study on goal-setting with 267 participants. She found that you are 68 percent more likely to achieve your goals just by writing them down. The physical act of writing helps you focus on what it is you truly want. As you move your thoughts from inside your head onto paper you continue to gain clarity and it makes your goals more tangible.

Secret No. 4 – Get outside your comfort zone

If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got! Everything you want is just outside your comfort zone. If you want to succeed in achieving your goals it’s important to do things in a different way. We all know that moving outside of our everyday routine can often mean being uncomfortable for a while but trust yourself, the more you practice something new, the more familiar and comfortable you will begin to feel. Stop listening to the reasons why you can’t do something, and get up and have a go and prove those reasons wrong.

Secret No. 3 - Get an accountability partner

Just like writing your goals down, telling someone else about what you want to achive can act as a great motivator for pursuing and achieving your goals.  Find someone in your life  who will  support you encourage you, ask great questions and keep you motivated to move towards your goals? Ask them to be your accountability partner. You could also be the one to support them!

Secret No. 2 – Have a step by step system in place.

It is not enough to simply have a goal.  It is essential to create a system will help you achieve your goals. Let’s say you have a goal of writing a book. It’s a big exciting goal. But so often because of its size the goal itself can create a feeling of overwhelm that keeps you stuck and prevents you from taking any step towards reaching the BIG goal. Instead, if you set up a simple system where you commit to spending half an hour every day at the same time to simply writing, before you know it your book will be written and your goal achieved!

Secret No. 1 – Practice attitude of gratitude

When you are feeling good about your life you are more likely to have the motivation to achieve your goals. Gratitude is about expressing appreciation for what you have in your life right now. Gratitude is something you can decide to fill your cup with everyday. It is said that finding things to be grateful for increases ones happiness level for the next 24 hrs. If you continue to put gratitude in your life for 21 days it has the capability of increasing your happiness state for the next 6 months.  Imagine what goals you could achieve in the next 6 months if you practice the attitude of gratitude.
